Ayurvedic Remedies for Dry Hair

Ayurvedic Remedies for Dry Hair

Dry hair is extremely frustrating. Your hair doesn’t feel soft, there’s no shine, and it seems to tangle with the snap of your fingers. Not to mention the breakage! Can you solve it? Absolutely. Carry on reading for science-based Ayurvedic remedies for dry hair.

Dry Hair: What is it, and Do I Have it?

Dry hair is from a lack of sebum production in the scalp, which gives hair its natural oils.

These oils keep your hair hydrated and nourished. Not enough will leave it dry and susceptible to damage. You may also experience dry hair if you use heating tools or harsh products that strip the hair of oils and evaporate moisture.

You can tell if you have dry hair by gently rubbing the hair between your fingertips. It may be dry if it feels rough or has a gritty texture. Split ends and frizz also indicate your hair needs moisture.

However, when I talk about frizz, I mean flyaways from breakage - not because of humidity or separated curls (for all you curlies out there!).

Ayurvedic Hair Remedies

Here are a few Ayurvedic remedies you can try to repair dry hair.

  1. Massage your scalp with amla oil.

People often forget that healthy hair starts from the root and begins with your scalp - which is skin! Think of it this way: how do you expect to have glowing skin on your face if it’s tight and dry? Well, you can’t, and the same applies to your scalp.

A blend of Ayurvedic herbs and invigorating essential oils will moisturise the scalp while stimulating your hair follicles. Amla oil for your hair is particularly beneficial because it’s a nutrient-rich antioxidant

Anti-oxidants shield the skin against free radicals (atoms that attack the cells in your body - including your hair follicles). A 2021 study found that the consumption of antioxidants helped hydrate and lubricate the skin.

Warm a few drops of amla oil, then rub it gently into the roots while giving yourself a scalp massage to stimulate blood circulation.

  1. Use fresh aloe vera.

Aloe vera is a staple for Ayurvedic beauty. A 2006 study suggests aloe vera is an effective humectant for moisturising skin. A humectant draws water molecules from the air and into your hair follicles, hydrating it.

You may have heard of humectants in skin care, such as hyaluronic acid. Recent 2020 research shows that aloe vera contains a high hyaluronic acid content. You can apply it to the scalp or onto your hair as a pre-treatment before washing it out.

  1. Include ashwagandha in your hair care routine.

The Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha is an adaptogen that protects the body against stress. It’s critical to use if you are under heavy and consistent pressure, as this may trigger a hormone imbalance. Imbalances within the body can affect sebum production on the scalp, causing dryness.

A 2012 study also suggests that ashwagandha holds the potential to reduce hair loss, making it even more beneficial for hair care.

Make a paste and apply ashwagandha to the scalp, or brew it in tea and take supplements to rebalance hormones and hydrate hair.

  1. Use a deep conditioning hair oil.

A deep conditioning oil treatment contains penetrating hair oils. These oils have a molecular structure that is small enough to pass through the hair cuticle and moisturise the hair from the inside out, replenishing strands with much-needed nutrients and hydration.

A 2006 study demonstrates that hair fibres absorb coconut, olive, and sunflower oil exceptionally well. Try our deep conditioning hair oil blended with olive, argan, coconut, avocado, and many more penetrating oils to rehydrate your hair.
